We mourn the passing of Burke Mountain Academy founder Warren Witherell on May 26, 2014. He was a visionary who created this amazing school and held it close to his heart until the day he died. As we were completing the Green Mountain Run, we learned Warren’s condition had deteriorated significantly. When we finished at the Canadian border we gathered together as a school and Kraig Sourbeer ’83 and I spoke to the students about Warren and observed a moment of silence in his honor. I had the opportunity to speak with him shortly before he passed. Even as he approached the end of his life, his spirits were bolstered by the thought of the students running the GMR, a tradition held dear by him and all Burkies. He wanted everyone to celebrate and enjoy the special day and we did, with fond memories of someone who gave so much of himself to our community. We will be forever grateful to him.
